Occam's Razor
Given a choice between two explanations, choose the simplest explanation which requires the fewest assumptions. The simplest explanation for today's gain is that it's near the end of the quarter and money managers are well-motivated to pump up their portfolios especially when you consider that their numbers at the end-of-the-week will determine their yearly bonus.
Sure, we could say that interest rate cuts are coming, the economy is stronger than most of us think, third quarter earnings will be simply awesome, and other "soft-landing" assumptions or we could just call it what it probably is - end-of-the-quarter portfolio dressing. Try not to outthink this one. It really isn't that difficult.
